 The island of Kauai, Hawaii, also known as the Garden Isle truly is paradise on earth. It has been said that the climate here more closely resembles that of the original paradise, the Garden of Eden,
than any other place on earth. If you have been here you know.
If you come here you will experience it for yourself. Mesmerized
by rolling green hills, rainbows, colorful canyons, warm ocean
water and freezing cold waterfalls, you will likely feel the presence
of what has been described as an "electric peace" by some - the
Holy Spirit by others. A sense of awe will fill you as you kayak
clean rivers and hike spotless trails, snorkel with whales or set
sail for the scenic Napali Coast. Whatever your vision of a tropical
paradise may be you will, in all probability, see it here. What
you may not see, however, is the PAIN. Polynesians are a proud
people and the suffering created in the battle against drugs, particularly
Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE), and drug related crime is well hidden
by faces that are conditioned to smile under any circumstances.
Still, unlike so many other places in the world where the battle
against drugs and crime appears to be lost and any type of intervention
has been reduced to mere damage control, the battle here on Kauai
still can be won. |

If you have been here you have undoubtedly driven past our correctional facility across from the golf course on Kuhio Highway. You may even have been one of many who have mistaken it for a hotel or some other tourist attraction. This is quite understandable as there are no gates or fences at the Kauai Community Correctional Center (KCCC).
KCCC Is home to the Life Time Stand (LTS), a revolutionary, co-ed, therapeutic, para-military/ agricultural, prison rehabilitation program developed and run by the KCCC warden Neal Wagatsuma and his staff. Changes that begin within individual inmates as a result of the tools and support given to them are often profound. However, the problem lies in the fact that most of these inmates are released into the very same environment that contributed to their being incarcerated in the first place. Without the proper environment and support an inmate is often doomed regardless of how much progress he or she makes while incarcerated.
